“My business was off 60-something percent after the storm,” says Vincent Caruso, whose family-owned air freight company has been in business since 1964. Thanks to a Business Recovery Grant, Vica, Inc. has survived the change in the business climate he has seen since Hurricane Katrina.
“I buy transportation and sell it to my customers,” Vincent explains. “Since there weren’t that many truck owner/operators in the area, I paid more to keep those I could find, even though business was down because there just weren’t the customers.”
“The economic development grant was a lifesaver. I had to pull money out of my personal savings to keep the business going. I’ve drawn very little salary since I reopened. The grant gave me some breathing room so I could pay bills and get my feet under me,” says Vincent.
Vincent also credits the grant with enabling him to take on more business. “After the storm, I had to turn some business down because I couldn’t get the operators,” he says. “Now, I won’t have to turn business down.
