Advanced Materials

As one of Louisiana's targeted growth industries, Advanced Materials is playing an increasingly important role in the state's economy. In addition to the oil & gas industry and the petrochemical industry, Louisiana has long been a user of sophisticated advanced materials. Due to corrosion, high pressures, temperature extremes and harsh chemical environments, the right choice of advanced materials is essential to any given industry.

Louisiana has developed a strong academic infrastructure for research and development in Advanced Materials. The centers linked on our website are striving to propel Louisiana as a national leader in material and process engineering development.

Beyond the state's continued support of the academic infrastructure, Louisiana has invested $18 million in the National Center for Advanced Manufacturing (NCAM). Located in the Michoud Space Center, NCAM is the world's most sophisticated carbon fiber placement unit, which is operated by our partners: NASA, Lockheed Martin and the University of New Orleans. Classroom facilities located onsite are training material engineers that will solve today's problems and develop tomorrow's solutions.

Louisiana also plays a critical role in the aerospace industry. NASA selected Michoud to manufacture and assemble the Crew Launch Vehicle upper stage, which is part of NASA's mission to develop a cost-effective, next-generation space transportation system. The system is part of an effort to safely and reliably take human explorers to the moon, Mars and on into the solar system.

Livingston, near Baton Rouge, is home to one of just three LIGOs (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatories) in the nation. LIGOs dedicated to the detection of cosmic gravitational waves and the measurement of these waves for scientific research that yields invaluable information on the nature of the universe.

If your company manufactures an advanced material, has improved upon an existing material, uses materials for solutions to problems or supplies companies with products or services, please contact our Advanced Materials industry director. In doing so, you will benefit from a sound network of private industry, academia and government.
